We have a self-cleaning oven (GE). We put in some stewing beef in a roaster into the oven at 300F for 45 minutes. After about 20 minutes there was smoke coming from the rear vent. When I noticed it I opened the oven door to see what was going on and had an extreme flash come from the oven, which burned my eyebrows and the hair on top of my forehead.
There were no spills in the oven (e.g. grease) of any kind. The side of the range was hot as if the self clean feature was on.
The first sign of something wrong was a week ago we were baking a frozen pizza. After about 20 minutes @400F (called for 23 minutes), smoke was coming from the vent and I just turned it off and left it as I didnt want to fill the house with smoke. When I took out the pizza, the bottom was like thick rubber soles of boots and the top was scorched. Not a normal baking cycle.
Three weeks before this we baked a normal pizza. No spills on the bottom of the oven as the pizza was on a cookie sheet.
Can anyone tell what happened in the oven?
I don't think it really matters exactly what happened. Unless you've left out something important, it's not working right, and you need to get it repaired. The best case is that it keeps burning your food, and the worst case is that you set your place on fire.
If you want to confirm that it's doing something wrong, you could put a thermometer in it and turn it on (no food) and confirm that it's getting way too hot. (Edit: but please be careful, as Aaronut said. If there's any sign things are going wrong, turn it off, and leave the door closed.)

Once that situation was taken care of, I gave up... turn on my vent and halfway panic while I quickly call it quits and pour the simmered water over my loose tea. Steam is coming from my teapot which really isn't normal. Later on, I try to scramble some... just to test it out. Any insight is greatly appreciated as this is really bothering me! the bottom and glass door, but the rest of the stuff was crusty and stuck to the bottom of the oven. I started the cycle and went about my business. About 15 minutes later I hear a loud POP and I run over to find little flames dancing at the bottom of the oven. I freak out, turn off the self-cleaning feature, grab the fire extinguisher and try to open the door, which wouldn't open (which I later... terrified to run the self-clean again for fear of my house bursting into flames unless I watch it (which I don't particularly want to, since the smoke is nasty). buzzing sound. I don't mean the sound of the fan cooling the electronics. It produces a distinct fan-like sound, and I can clearly hear it when it works (it is self-regulated and doesn't blow all... stainless steel pan with copper-sandwich bottom and mineral-based nonstick coating; a plain cast iron pan. I have noticed that the buzz seems to stop when I fill the cookware with enough food... was a vintage model from the mid 1970s. So if the buzz is normal for induction cooking today, why did they drop the non-buzzing technology used in this old piece? I found an explanation on the Internet
the internal temperature of 138 degrees? The cake is about 1.5 inches in height. I baked it for 1:10 minutes, then an extra 1 hour with tin foil on top (to prevent the top from burning). I thought I could replace this with roughly the same amount of pureed pumpkin (like what you would get in a jar). I want to pan-fry a burger tonight, but I don't want the smoke or smell in the house (we don't have a range hood, just an anemic exhaust fan that dates from the Truman administration). I considered grilling, but I don't want the trouble of cleaning up the grill. So, in true mashup form, I figured I could combine the two and heat the cast iron skillet outside on top of my chimney starter. Is this okay? I've seen people sear tuna above a chimney starter, but I haven't heard of using it like a campfire. Cooking-wise, I don't care too much about having the heat concentrated in the middle
My cake initially rises perfectly, but after about 20 - 25 minutes, the cake starts to slightly droop with the cake also pulling away from the side of the pan. I don't mind that too much, as the initial rising seemed to be a bit exaggerated anyway. But once I remove the cake from the oven, it droops further - in fact, it collapses. Some months ago, I found a recipe for cookies and made them in a big oven; they were delicious and cooked very well (soft cookies) at 180 °C (356 °F) for 7 minutes. I recently tried the recipe again, but I have no longer a big oven, so I used my little one (with heat source at the top and bottom). The cookies were still almost liquid after 15 minutes, and I though that was my oven that was too old and not keeping a good temperature; I tested on another oven that is new, and I got the same result.
