My wife has been wanting a dehydrator and our conventional microwave just went up. I did some research and found a new breed of microwave that I was previously unaware of, namely, the convection microwave oven. I'm wondering if I can kill two birds with one stone here and get both with my new purchase.
Can a convection microwave be used to dry fruit?
Previously, to dry fruit, she has just been setting the oven to a really low temperature for a couple hours and cracking the door ever so slightly. This has a mediocre level success and makes our house smell funny.
I would guess that you will get a the same limited success for a couple of reasons.
You might not have the correct heat required. Food dehydrators usually have an operating temperature around 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If you can get your convection oven to go that low, I don't think you would have a problem with accidentally cooking the food.
Heat however is only the first step. Dehydrators only use heat to coax the moisture out of the foodstuff. The key ingredients you are going to be missing is the air-flow and ventilation. A crucial component to de-hydrating is quickly removing the moisture (released by the heat) from the air surrounding it. The air flow allows for a higher evaporation rate since the moisture inside the food will be in a disequilibrium with with air surrounding it. The ventilation supplies the surrounding space with a constant supply or dryer air effectively maintaining disequilibrium. The greater the disequilibrium, the faster the food be de-hydrated.
If I were you, I'd make her happy and go get a good dehydrator with adjustable fan-speeds.
I'm just starting to learn to bake. I have a convection microwave oven and I've read at a lot of places that a convection microwave can be used for baking. But, everytime I bake something, it gets baked unevenly. I have never baked in anything but my own convection microwave oven. So, I don't know that the uneven baking is due to the oven or not. If anybody has ever faced a similar problem and has a fix for it, please reply. Could it be because of rotation inside the oven? Thanks.
Does a convection microwave make decent toast, as a toaster oven would or a bone fide oven set to broil? I have read far and wide on the internet and in operating manuals for Sharp, Bosch, etc. convection microwaves and have come up empty handed. I know you can't make toast in a microwave, but these are convection microwaves we're talking about here. Would prefer to hear from someone who... solutions that include 300CFM ventilation and lighting for our cooktop. We're not looking for a countertop unit. Hence the desire to see if these convection microwave units can do the deed! Thanks
I am moving into a house that needs a new oven. We aren't going to renovate the entire kitchen; we just want to swap out the oven. The current cabinet space for the oven can hold at most a 27 inch...? Edit: Should I mark this community wiki? Update: The KitchenAid True Convection Architect 27" has interior dimensions of 22" width, 16" height, and 18.75" depth, which appears to be just big enough for a 3/4 sheet pan. Update #2: It turns out my cabinet was just wide enough to actually fit a 30" oven, so this question is now pretty much moot for me. I'm going to leave it open for a while in case
I have a very small multi-function oven (about the size of a microwave) and for baking, the recommended setting is the "convection" one. Things bake fine in terms of taste, but muffins and cupcakes often get a sort of windswept look. The fan has clearly blown them into a lopsided shape while they're rising, but before they've set. With cupcakes, it's easy enough to trim them and hide it with icing, but not for muffins. Is there any way to avoid this effect, other than trying to bake them on a setting without the convection fan? Does this happen in larger convection ovens as well
Three months ago I moved to a new apartment. In my old apartment with my old oven, my baked goods turned out pretty well. However, since I moved, my baked goods vary from almost-good to throw-it-in-the-garbage instantly. I have a family size convection microwave oven instead of a full size oven. I make fruit cakes and have to change the tin for next year's competition. I've always used a round tin and now I have to use a square tin. How do I stop it from burning at the corners before the middle is cooked? I set it at 130 dgeress Centigrade and bake for 3-4 hours
For all my recipes I have been baking using convention plus fan assisted option and my bakes turn out to be good. But now I have moved to new house where there is a convection oven. I tried my cookie recipe with convection plus fan option, my bake turn out over cooked on the outside and undercooked on the inside. What is the difference between convention oven with fan assisted and convection with fan assisted? After googling for the difference, I am really confused whether convention oven can have fan? But I am sure the SMEG model I used before says "Conventional cooking with fan assisted".
We just grabbed our customary mint on our way out of the Asian Bistro by our house but when we opened it, it wasn't a mint and the wrapper was almost all in Chinese (I think). It was an Asian bistro, but most of the food was Chinese, so I'm guessing that it's Chinese. So the candy was green and definitely fruit flavored, but didn't taste like anything discernable.
